Workplace Walking Program Ideas

Effective workplace walking programs:

  1. Target the specific needs of employees or groups of staff
  2. Include training so staff knows how to participate
  3. Help employees find opportunities to increase walking, develop new walking skills, and move towards long-term behaviour modification
  4. Offer multiple ways to participate (i.e. organized group walks, individual walking programs, etc.)
  5. Make optimal use of existing resources

Some examples of workplace walking programs are:

10,000 Steps Challenge - Pedometer tracking program that encourages staff to reach 10,000 steps per day/employee. For information, tools, and resources to help implement a 10,000 Steps Challenge visit The Walking Site or 10,000 Steps

Stairway to Health - Encourages employees to take the stairs rather than the elevator. For more information visit the Stairway to Health website.

Walk to Work - Encourages employees to walk to and from work X days/week. Visit www.commuterchallenge.ca for ‘Commuter Challenge' information that may be helpful to you when you're starting this type of program.

For more examples of workplace wellness programs refer to Active Communities' Active Workplace Programs Guide.
