Urban Poling in Cranbrook BC

It all started at the beginning of May 2009 when Darlene Mackay of Cranbrook, BC put on an Urban Pole Walking Workshop. She had six ladies attend and try it.  

"These 6 ladies were interested in continuing so we decided on a date and began our journey. Since then we have not missed a Wednesday except for one day of bad weather," says Darlene.  

The ‘Many Walks of Life Club’

In 2009, Mission Friendship Centre Society partnered with Fraser Health Aboriginal Health Program to host a pilot program comprised of a physical activity component called “Many Walks of Life Club”.  This program was funded by the BC Recreation and Parks Association’s Everybody Active Initiative.

Carnegie Centre’s Walk/Run Clinic for the 2010 Vancouver Sun Run

The Downtown East Side Carnegie Centre’s Walk/Run Clinic, in preparation for the Vancouver Sun Run, began on January 31, 2010.

The Carnegie Centre was awarded a $5,000 Walk BC Grant to implement the walking program. Since then, coordinators have run weekly sessions (every Sunday), with an average of 43 participants.

School District # 72 Employees Step It Up A Notch!

In January 2009 School District #72 (Campbell River) initiated a 3-phase workplace physical activity program. The program ran throughout February and March and 177 employees "Stepped Up" to 10,000 steps a day. 

Fraser Health Walks at Lunch

On April 1, 2009 Fraser Health organized a "Walk at Lunch Day" as part of a 2-month long Healthy Living Challenge.

 

April 1st is Walk at Lunch Day! Start Organizing a Lunch-break Walk in Your Workplace!

Fraser Health is holding their 3rd annual Walk at Lunch Day on April 1, 2009. 

This event has proven to be a success in past years: 77 teams participated in 2008. This organized walk is part of a 2-month healthy living challenge in which all Fraser Health staff are encouraged to eat well... be active... and live tobacco free. 

Walking for Hope: North Shore’s 1st Iranian Women's Walking Club

For the first time with support from the Canadian Cancer Society, women of the North Shore's Iranian community have a walking club just for them called: HOPE. 

The walking club provides a safe, culturally appropriate social setting for Persian women to become more active and learn healthy living practices by trained female walk leaders.
