The Downtown East Side Carnegie Centre’s Walk/Run Clinic, in preparation for the Vancouver Sun Run, began on January 31, 2010.
The Carnegie Centre was awarded a $5,000 Walk BC Grant to implement the walking program. Since then, coordinators have run weekly sessions (every Sunday), with an average of 43 participants.
They discovered a challenge: many of the participants do not have proper walking/running shoes. Therefore, they’ve held a shoe drive and collected over 100 pairs of donated shoes.
They are using the granted funds to pay for food, water bottles, and supplies needed during the training sessions; as well as the participants’ entrance fees. The Vancouver Sun has been documenting inspirational stories, see the latest here.
