If you're lucky to have access to a facility with several treadmills in your community, here's a great idea for a treadmill walking group....
- Select 1 hour's worth of music. Record it for playing at your treadmill facility.
- Map-out your treadmill walk to the music. For example, in the 1st song you may plan a light warm-up, in the 2nd song you may plan rolling hills, the 3rd song may consist of several speed bursts, the 4th song may incorporate both hills and speed bursts, the 5th song may act as a lighter recovery song, the 6th song...etc... and make sure your last song cool's the group down.
- Practice your treadmill route at home to the music so that you are prepared to lead your walking group.
- Arrange for the facility to play your recorded music during your group walk.
- Meet your walking group at the facility, hand-out a copy of your tread-mill map, and go over your agenda with the group.
- Start walking.
- Throughout the walk, lead the group through the route. Announce when it's time to increase incline, decrease incline and increase or decrease speed.
- Have fun!
